Scripps Networks Deploys OmniBus Automation as Platform for HD/SD Playout, New Network Launches
Integration of OmniBus automation enables smooth migration to advanced multichannel automation for flexible, reliable playout and easy network expansion
DENVER — April 6, 2006 — OmniBus Systems, the award-winning provider of comprehensive automation and content management solutions to the broadcast industry, today announced that leading U.S. media group Scripps Networks has installed an OmniBus automation system at its Knoxville, Tenn., broadcast headquarters. The new automation solution will support Scripps Networks’ standard networks including Great American Country (GAC), as well as two new services ― HGTV HD and Food Network HD — being launched this spring.
“Our new OmniBus automation system brings more advanced and flexible technology into our facility while making it possible to add new HD and SD networks to our current offering,” said John Ajamie, Scripps Networks senior vice president of broadcast operations and maintenance engineering. “We chose this solution in particular because in our overall studies, we found the OmniBus architecture to be significantly more scalable than competing products, and we were attracted to the integrated content management system, which we felt would be valuable for future use as we continue to develop and expand our broadcast operations.”
Scripps Networks operates HGTV, Food Network, DIY Network, FINE LIVING TV NETWORKS, and Great American Country (GAC), as well as HGTV HD and Food Network HD. All of these networks are being migrated gradually from an aging automation system to the new OmniBus automation system. With systems integration, testing, and training complete, the Scripps broadcast facility also is prepared to commence playout of the company’s two new high-def network services.
The OmniBus system controls a leading video server system, acting as a file server, and a hierarchical storage management (HSM) archiving system. The new playout infrastructure enables easy launching of both SD and HD channels, and it will scale easily to meet the demands of Scripps’ network growth.
“OmniBus Systems has proved to be a flexible and forward-thinking company, and the company’s products reflect that character,” continued Ajamie. “The OmniBus MAM solution, for example, offers an eloquent way of managing content from ingest to air. Because the system has an open interface that would tie into our overall digital asset management system, it can enable extended sharing of data from our Omneon servers throughout the entire facility.”
