OmniBus Delivers HD on Short Timescale for chellomedia
Colossus Provides Ingest Capabilities and High Scalability to Three New HD Channels
LONDON — Aug. 29, 2006 — OmniBus Systems today announced its Colossus automation system has been installed at chellomedia for playout of three new high definition (HD) channels being launched earlier this month by the Netherlands broadcaster and content provider. Despite a short timeline for the installation, OmniBus delivered a quick and trouble-free installation that will meet chellomedia’s HD needs and provide them with scalability for the future.
Earlier this month, chellomedia took three new HD channels to air: the Film1 channel, the Sports1 channel, and the National Geographic channel. To automate the playout of these channels, chellomedia chose Omnibus. chellomedia’s Colossus system ingests the HD content to the Omneon servers using G3 Ingest, and uses Screen subtitling and Miranda logos in the playout.
"OmniBus has provided us with the tools necessary for quality HD playout and the scalability we need to keep up with technological changes," said Jon Try, head of engineering at chellomedia. "Most importantly, they did this in a very timely manner. The installation of the Colossus was trouble free and completed on a very short timescale."
Colossus is a timeline-based, multichannel, multidelivery automation and control system with tools for ingest, quality assurance, content management, workflow management, and interfacing with archive systems. As a result chellomedia will have the capability to ingest content from videotape locally, coding at either 30i or 50i.
Colossus is also scalable, allowing the system to grow without making a system-level change. Colossus implements G3 architecture that separates components into four types: a desktop shell with component plug-ins, device services, data services, and application services.
This means that new functional components can simply be added only to the desktops of the users who need them, providing a user interface that is tailored to specific applications and easy to link to other products from a variety of different manufacturers. There are no system-level changes to the software when new features are added and no bugs being introduced.
"We are very proud of the job we did at chellomedia. It is quite an accomplishment to complete a problem-free installation of an automation system in such a short time," said Robert Stopford, vice president of sales for OmniBus in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific region. "With the Colossus system in place, chellomedia’s HD playout is now an established and efficient operation, and they will have the ability to grow with the technology in the future."
