NRK Chooses OmniBus OPUS for 13-Site Media Asset Management System

Norwegian National Broadcaster Aims for World-Beating MAM Facilities

LONDON — November 27, 2006— OmniBus Systems, the award-winning provider of comprehensive automation and content management solutions to the broadcast industry, today announced that Norwegian national broadcaster NRK (Norsk Rikskringkasting) will install an OmniBus OPUS media asset management system (MAM) as part of its Programme Bank project to provide powerful MAM facilities to its 13 regional broadcasting centres and Oslo-based archive. With rollout beginning in early 2007, the system will provide access and direct control over programmes in production, raw assets, and archive material to 3,000 users across NRK's 14 domains.

"This is a groundbreaking project in many ways," said Laura Kirkland, OmniBus Systems account manager for NRK. "In the scope and scale of the implementation, the level of integration across platforms and sites, and the degree of access and flexibility NRK will have, this system is designed to meet the customer's ambition for a world-beating, multidomain facility."

This complex and powerful implementation of OmniBus OPUS will provide streamlined integration of the many new and existing technologies forming part of NRK's system, including a planning facility by MediaGenix, a radio system by D.A.V.I.D., a newsroom system from AP ENPS, production servers by Omneon, digital archive management from Front Porch Digital, and existing production environments from Avid and Quantel.

OPUS additionally provides direct integration for NRK's production operation by supplying sequences, shot lists, and metadata to the broadcaster's Final Cut Pro systems.

The OmniBus MAM solution allows NRK to produce content in the most efficient way, making the best use of valuable resources and ensuring content is available to all users faster and in the format they need. It also offers a basis for greater repurposing and sharing of content for current and future delivery platforms.

OmniBus will provide new functionality in the asset management layer for NRK's system to provide true content access rights on the user and attribute levels. It allows user grouping and incorporates a "traffic light" display in the interface to indicate permissions. With unified searching of any or all 14 databases and "baskets" for collaborative working, users easily can group and transfer together all assets for a project.

OPUS' Web client makes system-wide searches available to 2,400 users, providing intranet searching, browse, and keyframe viewing across the varied platforms comprising NRK's installations. NRK users will experience a very high degree of integration, which will allow staff members at an OmniBus Desktop to control routing and machine operation via a consistent and unified user interface, whether ingesting from an XDCam, browsing the archive, or producing a shot selection and exporting content to a craft editor.

To assist efficient use of the archive, OPUS Logging lets operators add custom-indexed metadata to provide powerful searching in OPUS PinPoint using synonym, phonetic, and proximity search criteria. Underpinning the OmniBus system is OPUS Workflow, which, coupled with the G3 Desktop, allows OmniBus to present the user with the exact tools needed to perform an individual task, therefore simplifying the user experience and making each task more productive.
