OmniBus Migrating Starz Entertainment to iTX Transmission System
130-Channel Installation Includes Primary and Backup Facilities, SD and HD Services
DENVER — Aug. 26, 2009 — OmniBus Systems, the award-winning provider of comprehensive broadcast automation, content management and workflow solutions, announced that the company has been selected to migrate Starz Entertainment to an all iTX transmission system later this year. Both the main Starz facility in Englewood, Colo. and its nearby disaster-recovery backup operation will be converted to run on OmniBus iTX.
Starz decided to upgrade its legacy SD and HD transmission infrastructure with OmniBus iTX in order to replace soon-to-be unsupported video servers and as a means to tap the vast potential of IT technology in broadcast transmission.
"Starz had envisioned a migration to software- and IT-based broadcast server technologies for some time, and when OmniBus brought iTX to the market, it was a great fit for us," said Ray Milius, senior vice president, Programming Operations for Starz Entertainment. "The logic is compelling: we've already realized great success and large cost savings by taking a software-based approach in other aspects of our operation, and that will now translate very effectively to the production and playout side. iTX is a robust platform that allows us to scale our operations as we need to, with the future-proof assurance that running on standard IT hardware brings."
Starz will use iTX to duplicate its existing operations in nearly every respect. Milius added, "The iTX system fits neatly into our present operation without demanding a lot of retraining or restructuring of workflows, and integrates very well with our existing in-house traffic and content-management systems. At the same time, iTX gives us a much greater ability to adapt and extend the operation to meet future contingencies."
iTX replaces the complexity resulting from multiple outbound hardware and software systems, such as the video server, automation, graphics device and logo inserter, by combining all these functions in a single suite of software applications. The ability to reduce the hardware footprint and the error potential that sometimes occurs with multiple systems is an important advantage to Starz. Also important is iTX's ability to manage a piece of content in a single IT based storage repository that can then be leveraged across multiple transmission channels.
"We are very excited about Starz Entertainment's decision to go with an all-iTX transmission system, and the aggressive installation schedule shows just how quickly broadcasters can get major operations transferred to iTX," said Mike Oldham, CEO, OmniBus Systems. "Starz has been a long-standing OmniBus customer with a forward-looking approach to technology, and their example will be of great interest to all broadcasters. Many broadcasters today are searching for the best way to move smoothly beyond legacy infrastructure towards a more agile and flexible platform that meets all their current needs, without restricting future evolution. That solution is exactly what iTX provides."
